Disable File Exchange without rebooting

Since OS 8.5/Evil Open has been a topic... here's a way to save some reboots. I've included the entire email including the advertisements since it's copyrighted, so anyone interested in joining this tip list can
do so, and to abide by their rules for reposting....

Changing File Exchange

Power User
There may come a time when you'd prefer that File Exchange (the control panel that translates PC files into a format understandable to Mac) would not go about its business. Sure, you can disable it with Apple's Extension Manager but that requires that you restart your Mac. There's an easier way:

Just create these two AppleScripts in the Script Editor:

tell application "File Exchange"
set PC file system enabled to true
end tell

tell application "File Exchange"
set PC file system enabled to false
end tell

The first script switches File Exchange on and, as you might have guessed, the second turns it off.

If you plan to switch File Exchange on and off routinely, then create the scripts in Script Editor, save then as applications, and check the Never Show Startup Screen checkbox.
